Bio

Paul Sayed (b. 1987, Seoul, Korea) composes and performs acoustic and electronic music. As a composer, Paul tries to blend different styles of music together and foster inter-disciplinary collaborations. Recent collaborations include Grace in the Wind, with Cervena Barva Press poet Mary Bonina. Also, Paul provided the music for the short film Nobody Has to Know directed by Julian Walker, which received an honorable mention at the Texas Black Film Festival in 2010.

In May 2013, Paul earned a Master of Music in composition from the Longy School of Music of Bard College, located in Cambridge, MA. At Longy, Paul was a recipient of the Longy Presidential Scholarship and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Memorial Scholarship. Paul also won the conservatory honors competition with his piece Metropolitan Snapshots written for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Before Longy, Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College, a top liberal arts college, located in Davidson, NC. At Davidson College, Paul was inducted into the Alpha Nu Xi chapter of the National History Honor Society Phi Alpha Theta. Also at Davidson, Paul received the James B. Duke Scholarship and the Davidson College Presidential Scholarship.

Paul’s teachers and mentors in composition include Dr. John Morrison (principal teacher at Longy), Dr. Jennifer Stasack (principal teacher at Davidson, Dr. Jeremy van Buskirk, Dr. Paul Brust, and Dr. Hayes Biggs (private lessons summer 2009).
